1st International Conference on Enhanced Recovery
Announcing the 1st International Conference on Enhanced Recovery:
9-10 September 2010, Bristol, UK
Bringing together international expertise to highlight the impact that Enhanced Recovery has on surgical patient care.

Reduced physiological stress and improved bowel recovery
Reduced physiological stress and improved bowel recovery: Achievement in radical cystectomy by intra-operative fluid optimisation using trans-oesophageal doppler monitoring
Pillai, P.L., Durkan, G.C., Johnson, M.I., Nesbitt, I., Snowden, C., Cosgrove, J., Thorpe, A.C.
Freeman Hospital, Dept. of Urology, Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Introduction & Objectives:

Radical Cystectomy generates a significant pro-inflammatory response demanding more oxygen and need for effective tissue perfusion. The GI tract faces a major part of the surgical insult in the form of occult ischemia contributing to an increased incidence of Multi Organ Dysfunction Syndrome and late bowel recovery resulting in delayed patient discharges. Oesophageal Doppler Monitoring (ODM) is a minimally invasive technique for continuous circulatory monitoring and is aimed at goal directed intra-operative fluid optimisation. The objective of this study was to determine whether the use of ODM influence the intra-operative Haemodynamics and reduces the physiological stress and facilitate early return of bowel function.

ERAS Society
Friday, 11 June 2010 11:02
FTSurgery is most pleased to announce that in a meeting in Örebro (Sweden), and after some preliminary contacts, the ERAS Society was formally launched. Most of participants are very well known experts on Enhanced Recovery, working in this field since long-time. Prof. Olle Ljungqvist, chairman, explained the goals for the ERAS Society:

"The overall aim of the ERAS Society is to improve the care of the surgical patient by means of research and development, education and implementation.

Specific aims are to:

  1. Research using the database as a basic resource.
  2. Build a network of experts that will serve as a center of expertise in different countries/regions. These centers will serve as national coordinators, data managers for the country and teachers in implementation programs.
  3. Structure scientific information to educational material and secure implementation strategies into daily practice (refresher courses / information / updates of the educational material)
  4. Build and maintain an outstanding Web site focused on ERAS
  5. Run annual congresses for operating specialties, anesthetists and intensive care physicians along with their nursing staff.  "
